One for Neil
(Benefit for Neil Stalnaker)

As many of you know our good friend, trumpeter and artist Neil Stalnaker has been fighting throat cancer for quite some time now. He was also in the hospital for pneumonia and had to have a tracheotomy. He recently was able to return home but has had other trips to the emergency room. Needless to say, he's had a really rough time. Not only physically but financially as well.

A few years ago I organized a benefit concert for Neil and it was a great success. We raised a lot of money and so many people came to show support for him. Unfortunately, in these strange times I'm not able to book a venue to do that again. I was thinking of how to raise money so he can continue his treatments and buy the special products he needs to keep fighting. I wrote this simple song ”One for Neil” while I was in Hokkaido. Neil often talked how he wished he was there and how the lifestyle is more healthy than Tokyo. As a fellow West Virginian I know what it's like to miss the mountains, campfires and nature. At first I was just making a demo by myself then the idea hit me. I'm going to get some of our mutual friends to record this song and I'm going to sell it to raise money for the cause.

僕たちにとっても、皆さまにとっても、とても大切な友人である、トランペッター、アーティストのNeil Stalnaker。
彼は咽喉がんと、長い年月に渡り闘っています。そして先日も肺炎を患い気管切開のため入院をしておりました。
現在は自宅に帰ることも許可されておりますが、救急処置室と自宅を往来する生活となっております。
言うまでもなく、とても、大変な状況です。
彼の身体、病状だけでなく、経済的な面においてもです。

数年前に、私はNeilのための慈善コンサートを開催しました。たくさんの皆様にお越しいただき、温かいご援助をいただき、Neilをサポートさせていただく事ができました。
ですが、現在、世界中に猛威を奮っているコロナ禍の為、慈善コンサートをする事も不可能な状況にあります。

ですが、Neilがこれからも治療を続け、癌と闘うために必要な特別な物を購入できるように、どうにかしてサポートができないかと、考えておりました。
そこで私は、この”One for Neil”という曲を書きました。
コロナが始まった12月から３月まで、私は北海道で仕事をしており、その時に書いた曲です。
Neilは、よく私に言いました。
「自分もそこに行けたら…。東京よりもどれだけ健康的な生活が送れるだろう…」と。
同じウエストバージニア出身の者として、故郷を思い出させてくれる山々や、キャンプファイヤー、自然への恋しさはどれだけのものだろう
と身をもって感じます。
はじめは、私1人でデモを作りましたが、ある時、この曲をNeilに所縁のある友人達にもお願いをして、みんなで作り販売できれば、その売上金をNeilに寄付することができると思い、今回の企画を立ち上げることにしました。
